Lead

Lead is one of the oldest metals in use, still to be found in pipes in a large number of houses and buildings all over the world.It is possible to find traces of  lead in any drinking water. But particles of lead can also become detached from a led pipe; specially if the water is allowed to stand. The occupants of houses with lead pipes are advised to let the water run for some time before drinking it or using it to cook with.

At greatest risk are preganant women, and breast or bottle fed infants who can absorb up to 50% of this lead. High blood levels or lead can affect children developmentally in terms of ingelligence, growth and behaviour.

The Filter cartridge used in the BRITA jug and cask filter sustems contains Activated Carbon and Ion Exchange Resin. The resin used is called a weak acidic cationic resin, wich will remove positive charged lead ions.

Copper

Copper is a heavy metal, but also a trace element. There for the use of copper pipes in drinking water installations is controversial.

Copper is an essential trace element for humans. It is estimated that adult requirementes are about 2-3 mg. per persosn a day. High soses of copper (more than 50 mg./Kg. body weight) can be lethal. Copper is stored in the liver, brain and mustle tissue. Copper is eliminated from the body mainly in bile. Effects of copper poisoning are associated with cirrhosis of the liver  and in consumption of water containing over 3 mg./L copper are diarrea, progressive loss of strength, and vomiting. Infants are most susceptible. Concentrations above 2 mg. / L are known to cause ill-effects in some people. Exposure to concentrations above 3 mg. /L are known to cause ill-effects in some people. Exposure to concentrations above 3 mg. /L for a number of months can cause liver damage in young infants. (The concentration of copper in tap water can rise substantially when water wit low PH and hardness remains in contact with copper pipes and fittins.
